“This year’s theme, Essence, speaks to our collective search for the things that bring us essential happiness. Through diverse and contrasting tonal palettes, we find moments of calm and empowerment as well as optimism and luxury.”
Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux Colour & Communications Manager
The Dulux colour team has been forecasting colour for more than two decades through researching, exploring and embracing global trends. For 2020, their forecast ‘Essence’ incorporates four diverse palettes all with hints of escapism to calm and inspire.
Repair: Embrace the romance of slow living
The colours in this palette speak to nurturing and regeneration – an antidote to all white interiors which can be harsh. Calm, rejuvenating colours urge us to disconnect and take pleasure in wellbeing and nature.
Dulux Styling tip // “Japanese design cues fill our spaces with a sense of harmony and cultivate a peaceful connection to nature.”
Indulge: Immerse yourself in a lush world of colour
The Indulge palette creates a sense of luxury and invites us to look through rose coloured glasses. This lush world is full of rich colour and texture, and soft rounded forms.
Dulux colour tip // “Selecting a decadent colour such as rich red or earthy brown can add an essence of sophistication while also evoking intimacy and connection.”
Grounded: Build yourself a simple, beautiful life
Grounded adopts a less is more approach, inspiring an uncomplicated life without compromising on beauty. Warmth, comfort and texture evoke welcoming, humble living.
Dulux styling tip // “The key to beautiful, minimal interiors is to ensure there is just the right amount of texture. Bring this in through furniture materials such as rattan and textiles in styling.”
Comeback: Express your true colours
Comeback is all about sparking creativity and breaking out to express ourselves. This rich and layered aesthetic is maximalist and unexpected, with tonal blues that are at once both serene and refreshing.
Dulux design tip // “Create architectural detail where none exists using graphic shapes on your wall.”
