If you could describe the perfect Educator, they would be compassionate, understanding, attentive, experienced and passionate. That’s Wendy Beard, Online Education Manager, at Interior Design Online, to a tee. Wendy left her high-flying career in travel to pursue her passion for interior design. Juggling small children, while studying interior design at Sydney Design School, as well as developing a successful online homewares and interior design business “Hello Yellow”, Wendy understands the challenges but ultimate reward of reinventing yourself. She is proof that if you follow your passion and work hard, anything is possible. This is a philosophy she shares with her students. Wendy understands that starting a new career path can be daunting, however with support and guidance anything is possible.
What do you love about design?
“The impact it can have on people. Even subtle changes such as introducing colour and texture in a space can result in people falling back in love with their home. I particularly love the challenge of making spaces work better with clever planning.
Working collaboratively on a project and inspiring people to be confident in their choices is so rewarding. In particular, getting people to embrace colour is so satisfying, as it has the power to positively impact people’s lives.”
What inspires you?
“Travel of course. There is so much to see in the world, particularly in design. I’m also inspired by other people – designers, artists, craftsman, artisans and my students. We are all part of a wonderful design community. Being connected is crucial for creative beings.
I’m particularly inspired by Julia Green, owner of Greenhouse Interiors. She is a champion of local artisans and designers, is bold in her colour choices, stays true to her design ethos and is so authentic.”
What project have you loved?
“I recently completed the transformation of a shell into a luxurious beach cabin. I’m a stickler for detail and I love supporting local craftsman, so the design is full of locally sourced, sustainable materials and one-off custom pieces. From the first brick laid, to the last cushion placed, I poured all my artistic energies into the project. I’m so happy with the result – a small space that is big on personality.”
What do you love about teaching?
“I understand that study can be daunting… I’ve been where my students are. I also know that learning something you are passionate about can be life changing. Watching my students transform as they develop their skills and confidence, is so rewarding. I tell them to believe they can…and they do! There is no better feeling that inspiring others to have the courage to challenge themselves.
What has really surprised me about teaching is how fulfilling it is and the deep connections I make with the students as I support them on their design journey. Being able to share my experiences and passion with others is a real pleasure. I’m excited to watch IDO grow and evolve and look forward to meeting our future designers.”
